Safety at Southwest Landfill

At Southwest Landfill, keeping our community and our workers safe is the most important thing we do. Safety is a priority throughout our operations, from the very base of our Landfill’s liner to the trucks we screen as they enter our gates.

How We Protect The Community

  • Built Strong: Our on-site employees have over 100 years of combined waste management experience.

  • Protects Groundwater and Surface Water: Southwest monitors its existing waste footprint with 19 individual groundwater monitoring wells. Groundwater samples are analyzed in a lab for groundwater and surface water safety.

  • Protects the Air: Our landfill gas management system collects gas through a series of pipes and 78 gas wells. Collected gas is routed to an on-site flare where it is safely destroyed. The Landfill’s surface and exterior gas probes are also regularly monitored to ensure the landfill gas system is operating properly.

  • Screened for Radiation: Southwest Landfill screens every load of waste for potential nuclear radiation with an industrial radiation detection system. This ensures that every load that enters the site is free from potential radioactive waste.

  • Inspected Regularly: Southwest Landfill is inspected tri-annually by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

  • Overseen Continuously: Southwest Landfill uses data management software that allows its operators to monitor both the gas collection system and leachate storage system right from their smart phones. This ensures that our personnel are informed about our infrastructure operation 24-hours a day.

Think. Choose. Live.

Republic is dedicated to the safety of our employees, customers and the communities we serve. Our ‘Think. Choose. Live.’ slogan encapsulates our everyday safety message to our employees to: Think about what you are doing, Choose the safe answer, and Live to go home to your family. According to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Republic’s safety performance has been 41 percent better than the industry average for the past ten years.
